How to Calculate Deck Boards

Estimating deck boards is mostly geometry: deck area, board width, and the gap you leave between boards. This guide walks through the same logic the free calculator uses, so you can check a quote or a sketch by hand.

Results are planning estimates. Structural joist sizing, ledger attachment and railings are separate code issues—confirm those with local rules or a professional.

What you need to know

Deck length and width — the walking surface you want to cover
Board width — actual face width (not always the nominal size on the label)
Gap between boards — for drainage and expansion
Board direction — usually perpendicular to joists

Basic formula

Convert everything to the same unit.
Effective width per board line ≈ board width + gap.
Number of boards across ≈ deck width ÷ effective width (round up).
Board length ≈ deck length in the other direction (plus overhang if planned).
